How to store soap bars between uses

A puddle in the dish. A bar that stays soft underneath. Check where your soap rests: it needs to drain and air-dry between uses.

A draining holder helps, but its position matters too. Keep the bar beyond the shower spray, and give wet soap a chance to dry before shutting it in a travel case. Here’s what to check at home and on the go.

Give the water somewhere to go

Look for a holder that lifts the soap above any collected water. Slats, holes or a raised insert can do that job, provided the water has somewhere to escape. A pretty dish with a puddle in the bottom needs a second look.

Try this before putting the bar back: tip a little water into the empty holder. Does it drain away, collect below the raised surface or sit exactly where the soap will rest? Empty any collected water and check that the bar will sit above it.

Letting soap dry between uses on a well-draining rack is also the advice given by UK soap maker Friendly Soap. The aim is to stop the bar spending its downtime in water.

Wet underneath, splashed or shut away? Find the cause

The underside is sitting in a puddle
Lift out the bar and empty the dish. Check underneath any removable insert too. Clear visible soap build-up from the drainage openings, following the holder’s cleaning instructions.
The dish drains, but the bar keeps getting wet
Watch where the shower spray lands, including when someone else uses it. Move the holder to a stable spot beyond the spray. If every shelf gets soaked, take the dish out after use and let the soap dry elsewhere.
The soap goes straight into a closed container
Leave it somewhere it can air-dry before closing the lid. Airflow matters as well as drainage: Ethique’s bar-care guidance also advises against sealing wet bars in containers.

If you use a soap bag

The Sea Essence Exfoliating Soap Bag is made from nylon mesh. Its care instructions say to rinse it thoroughly after each use and hang it to dry.

A hook beneath the shower spray will keep getting the bag wet. Give it space to hang freely beyond the spray, rather than leaving it bundled on a wet shelf.

Packing a bar after the gym or a night away

For Sea Essence’s 150g soap bars, leave enough space for the whole bar to rest securely. Weight alone won’t tell you whether a travel case fits, so check its usable space against your bar before buying.

Let the bar dry before packing whenever you can. If you have to leave while it’s still damp, use a suitable travel container for the journey, then unpack it and let it air-dry when you arrive. Wet Shaving Products’ soap-care guide makes the same practical distinction between short transport and leaving wet soap shut away.

A quick check before you leave it

  • Is the bar clear of standing water?
  • Will it stay out of the next shower’s spray?
  • Can air reach it?
  • If it’s travelling, will you unpack it to dry?
